| Q: |
Is a
cartridge necessary for DVD-RAM ? |
| A: |
No,
Singled-sided 4.7GB DVD-RAM media is available as both a bare disc
or in removable cartridge from multiple sources. The removable media
cartridge can be thought of in the same manner s a tape cartridge
or CD jewel case. For media/data protection, storage, archiving
or shipment. In the many large DVD library applications where media
is seldom handled, bare double-sided 9.4GB media is often used. |

| Q: |
How reliable
is the data stored on bare DVD-RAM discs
? |
| A: |
Ordinary levels
of dust and fingerprints can be wiped off the disc with a cleaning
kit and do not
affect the data quality. Minor scratches will not affect data.
DVD-RAM drives incorporate extensive defect
management and error correction capabilities which are much more
powerful than any solutions implemented
up to now. These added capabilities are significantly more capable
of recovering data than previous
solutions.
Obviously,
the data has more protection in the cartridge or in the bare disc
case. But with careful, intelligent
handling, data can be read from the media hundreds of times for
at least the next 30 years.

| Q: |
Can 2.6GB
DVD-RAM drive read and write 4.7GB DVD-RAM media ? |
| A: |
No, it can't
read and write 4.7GB DVD-RAM MEDIA, because their spec is different.
When 2.6GB DVD-RAM
was in the market, the specification of 4.7GB DVD-RAM is not to
be confirmed. So the 4.7GB
DVD-RAM can read and write 2.6 DVD-RAM media.

| Q: |
Why don't
DVD-RAM drives write to CD-R and CD-RW media ? |
| A: |
Because
of the cost/consumer benefit/reliability issue, the Forum chose
not to add CD-R/CD-RW capabilities.
They did, however, provide read capability to protect the user's
storage investment in older technology.
To add this write capability would have required the addition of
a second laser system in the
drive. This would increase the cost to consumer and add to the complexity
of the drive. Ultimately, the
complexity becomes a drive issue and the costs must be passed along
to the consumer. The price of
today's CD-RW drives are so low that buyers are better of buying
CD-RW drives for low-capacity storage
requirements and DVD-RAM for higher capacity /performance storage
requirement. However, there
is nothing to prohibit any manufacturer from adding the capability
in the future. |

| Q: |
Can we
use DVD-RW writer for DVD-RAM ? |
| A: |
No, you cannot,
because the specs are different. Now DVD-forum promotes the DVD-MULTI
which enable
disc compatibility for virtually all formats officially created
by the DVD-Forum, both for personal computer
(PC) and Consumer Electronics (CE) products. It
defines the minimum requirements of DVD Multi Drive, Player and
Recorder using 4.7GB DVD discs without
cartridge for compliance among the DVD Multi products. |
|
| Q: |
Can general
DVD-Player/Drive read DVD-RAM/-RW/+RW media ? |
| A: |
Currently not
possible for DVD-RAM but improving technology should allow it soon.
Basically,
DVD-RW/+RW format is compatible with existing DVD-ROM/Video Players.
Very old
models cannot understand the combination of Low reflectivity and
Single layer. In such cases, DVD+RW
will not be played back. |
|
| Q: |
After
DVD-RAM/-RW had been recorded by recorder, Can they playback on
|
|
the drive
directly ? |
| A: |
For
DVD-RW this is no problem. |
| |
For
DVD-RAM the end-user must install a software (DVD-MovieABLUM) .
